Look, you could learn to food blog for $795! Steve Shaw says it’s a “first-rate education” but, sigh. I can’t even get worked up for this. Let me put it this way: Moira Hodgson wrote about food for 30-odd years and the Observer doesn’t want to pay for her meals. Why should someone starting out pay $800 bones to learn at the foot of Steve Shaw when they’re not going to have a paying gig anytime soon, either? I know these Learning Annex/Mediabistro type classes are tempting, but let me say this—speaking from experience—that they are not worth it. I’m not anti-education, but it’s nigh impossible to teach writing, at least in a class like that. Practice, write some good stuff and be unafraid to promote yourself while you schmooze. That $800 is better spent on Klonopin to mitigate any awkard feelings you might have at a restaurant opening party.
