Rivers Cuomo has Lil Wayne guest on his record, jams live in session with Kenny G, and is selling his new album as a bonus gift with a Weezer-branded Snuggie. He exists in a continuum of irony and non-irony so hilarious and confusing that if he’s not the new Andy Warhol, he’s at least rock’s answer to Jeff Koons.

The new Klosterman—shh—has an essay that in part touches on Rivers Cuomo being “authentic” in his artistic output. Essentially, he can make both Pinkerton and… well, everything else that followed and they are both true to his own personality—but not the fanbase, which for the most part wants him to remain in the Pinkerton era in what he does. Klosterman mentions as an aside how there is a big chunk of Weezer fans who take the latter albums as a personal affront—these people feel the albums aren’t just bad, they’re actually mocking the fans.

It’s impossible to separate Weezer, aka one of the first bands I ever cared about (I had the blue album on tape, thank you very much) with their output. From where I sit, I don’t consider anything after the green album as an affront. It’s more like seeing a friend from adolescence at a wedding every year or so, and at each one, he’s managed to get drunk enough to piss his pants within the first hour of the reception.

I thought of this the other day reading the ‘ultra-marathoners remove their toenails’ article.

I thought about it while reading the Times the other day TOO, but it was a different — and more ominous — article! The topic was slow marathoners:

At the Marine Corps Marathon, in the Washington, D.C., area, runners must keep a pace of 14 minutes per mile or risk being booted from the event near the 20-mile mark. A bus looms there, waiting to pick up those who fail to cross the 14th Street Bridge before it reopens to traffic. Those who choose to continue on the open course do so at their own risk, taking to the sidewalks or dodging traffic.

At the Berlin Marathon, where the cut-off time is 6:15, the “slow police” are notorious for lurking at the back of the pack. “If runners aren’t able to finish in the time we put in our information book, we ask them to leave the course and find their way to their hotel, or get in the bus,” the race director Mark Milde said.

The “slow police”. CHILLING.

Um, yeah, but 6:15 is a 4.2mph pace, less than the average foot speed in Times Square. So basically the Berlin Marathon is an MS Walk? Related: Except that now MS Walks have BEEN OVER-PARENTED. I did 25 miles when I was 13, in some really sketchy neighborhoods (with almost no route markers). Now? 3 MILES? It’s the MS Stroll.

One, yay MS Walk and mazel to anyone doing it.

Two, European marathons are strange. A friend recently ran the Médoc Marathon, which includes multiple pit stops for wine tasting. Oh, and costumes, since nothing makes the nipples chafe less than a slutty elf outfit.

Kinda digging the cover of the new Stephen King, which is now on pre-order at Amazon for $9. I last read one of his books in the seventh grade, so who knows how good it will be, but I find him entertaining. And you have to respect how many of his stories become films.
